2024 Fish Population Survey: A Vital Check-Up for the Kings River

As the seasons change the Kings River’s health and vibrancy remain a top priority for the Kings River Fisheries Management Program (KRFMP). This year’s annual Fish Population Survey brought together nearly 100 volunteers, trained staff, and state-of-the-art equipment to carry out one of our most significant monitoring events of the year on the Kings River.

Why the Fish Population Survey Matters

The Kings River directly impacts local communities and more than a million acres of farmland across Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties. The fish population survey plays a critical role in ensuring the river remains a thriving ecosystem. Since 1983, the surveys have provided key insights into the biodiversity, health, and balance of fish species inhabiting the lower Kings River downstream of Pine Flat Dam. This work is essential for maintaining sustainable fisheries and informing adaptive management strategies that balance environmental stewardship with other beneficial uses of the river.

What the Survey Reveals

The 2024 survey focuses on understanding the population dynamics of rainbow trout, the river’s signature sporting species, alongside several species of native and non-native fish. Using electrofishing equipment, trained staff and volunteers collect fish at six sites along the river over the course of six days. Fish are examined by a dedicated work-up team onshore to gather critical data, such as:

• Population size and density
• Size distribution
• Condition of trout
• Composition of fish assemblage

This data allows KRFMP and its partners—Kings River Conservation District, Kings River Water Association, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife—to make informed decisions about habitat improvements and fish stocking efforts.

Beyond the data, the survey fosters a deep sense of community and collaboration. Volunteers—local anglers, conservation enthusiasts, students, and more—come together to contribute to this shared mission of preserving the Kings River for future generations.

“We brought my students so they could get this experience. They are familiar with the area but now they get the understanding of what they are doing and also the conservation aspect. It is merging the scientific point of view, the fieldwork, and conservation.”

The Broader Impact on the Kings River

Habitat Improvements

Results guide the placement of sheltering boulders, spawning gravel, and other enhancements that create ideal conditions for fish to thrive.

Stocking Programs

The health and diversity of fish populations inform decisions about the supplemental rainbow trout stocking program, ensuring a robust and resilient fishery.

Adaptive Management

Data helps refine program implementation strategies and allows flexibility in responding to changing conditions, limitations, and opportunities.

Looking Ahead

The Kings River Fisheries Management Program’s commitment to scientific monitoring ensures that the river continues to flourish. Whether you’re an angler, a local resident, or a visitor, the health of the river impacts us all.

The 2024 Fish Population Survey represents more than just numbers—it is a testament to the power of community-driven stewardship, innovation, and a deep respect for our natural world.
